The priestly ministrations of massage

2/5/2019

Massage therapy is priestly in its ministrations.  As I prepare for a massage, I methodically set the table, turn on its heater, warm the stones, heat the towels, choose appropriate essential oils, and light candles with prayer for our work together.  I’m often struck by how similar my massage preparations are to readying a space for worship.

What happens on the massage table is sacramental.  You lay yourself bare before another to lay hands on you in hope of healing, which is the most vulnerable prayer.  Just as you never quite know what will happen when you pray, you can’t always be certain what will present itself for healing when you’re on the massage table.  I can think we’re going to proceed according to some general plan we have devised based on what you’ve told me is bothering you, but then your body can tell me  something deeper is wrong that needs attention, so I follow that guidance.  Sometimes, you're surprised by emotions that seem to abduct you.
After all, all sorts of emotions arise that may be attached to physical pain. Usually these emotions are things we've tried to run away from or repress.   Since our emotions occur throughout the body, not just the brain, it makes sense that massage can unlock some of our stuck emotions that may need to be released in order for us to be healed.  If you’re the one on the table, this can feel like an emotional ambush. All of a sudden you’re crying and don’t quite know why.  It's kinda embarrassing, but quite common.  In fact, it’s part of the healing process.

When something like that happens, it is a holy moment, and as a massage therapist and priest, I handle the story of your life with sacramental care.  I hold your story up to God, like a priest elevating the elements at communion.
